Today the grade 5's started looking at long division using a method called "chunking". Below is an example with a summary of the steps. This is an easier way for students to understand the concept of breaking up a large number - they only write the answer at the end (adding together numbers in the 'cloud' after completing all the steps). We will also be looking at the more traditional method of long division later this week/early next week.
The grade 4's starting looking at different ways to describe calendar dates. This week we will also look at various ways to express a certain time (5 after 4, 10 to 6, quarter after 8, etc.) and practice measuring elapsed time.
In science this week we will conduct an experiment to see if liquid water weighs the same as ice, and look at the difference between physical and chemical changes that can be made to substances.
In Christian education we will take a close look at a mouse trap to understand the concept of irreducible complexity.
