ELA: The students did a superb job on their "Summer Highlights" writing!! They included lots of detail and interesting descriptions. They worked hard and wrote many pages. Check these out on the bulletin board in front of my office.
Today, we began a new approach for Literacy called the "Daily Five". The philosophy involves more student choice, as to when they will do specific activities. It is motivational and teaches self-regulation. We are excited as the students are learning to develop stamina and stay engaged mentally for longer periods in Reading, Writing and Word Study.
Math: Both grades are making 'smart' goals for math this term (Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, Timely). They are also starting a unit on patterns and equations.
Social Studies: We are starting to learn about First Peoples in Canada. Tomorrow we have a guest speaker coming from the Transcona Historical Museum to facilitate an archaeological dig! We will also look at theories of how First Nations people first came to North America.
