We hope you all enjoyed the Thanksgiving weekend!

ELA:  Today we began studying a new theme in Literacy- MYSTERY.  We will be reading mysteries and discussing the elements that are common in this genre.  We will be writing some short stories and developing our writing by Narrowing the Focus.  That will help us organize our thinking and writing.

The students worked on new spelling words on Friday that related to our science theme on the Solar System. We will assess their spelling of these words on Friday this week. 

 

Math:  The grade 5's are working on using benchmarks to grasp how big a million is, and describing large numbers in different ways (expanded form, place value charts, etc.).  The grade 4's are learning different mental math strategies, including 'make a friendly number' and 'count up'.

 

Social Studies: Students have been using atlas maps to discover what type of vegetation covered the traditional territories of the various First Peoples communities, and inferring how the land affected their lifestyle.  We will be wrapping up our unit this week.

 

Science: We will be starting our investigations of the solar system this week, starting with our trip to the museum.  We will be participating in the Solar System Workshop, and then go on a scavenger hunt in the Living in Space exhibit in the science gallery.  Later this week, we will look at the relative size and position of the planets.

 

Please remember that your child needs their school shirt and a cold lunch tomorrow for the field trip.
