ELA: Students are practising reading comprehension skills using various texts. Some of these skills are a form of review and some are areas of new skill development. I like to remind the students that

"Good readers read the words on the page. GREAT readers use these skills while they are reading to understand the text in depth..."

1. Making connections- to the text, self and the world around them

2. Questioning- asking questions about the text, author, words on the page

3. Mental Images- create a visual picture in their mind about what they are reading

4. Inferring- infer meanings of unknown words, phrases, ideas

It has been very successful so far.  We appreciate the support you have shown and we look forward to the Book Fair, Bake sale and Evening in the Arts tomorrow! The Book Fair opens at 5:30- 8:15 pm and the concert will be from 6:30- 7:30 pm.

Math: The grade 3's have been surveying different classes, keeping track of their information with tally charts, and have organized their results on our bulletin board in the form of a line plot.  This week we will also look at bar graphs, the similarities between bar graphs and line plots, and how to decide which graph to use.  The grade 4's have needed some extra practice of division facts in order to estimate quotients.  Students will also use manipulatives to start dividing numbers with remainders this week.

Social Studies:  Yesterday we used Google Maps to help us locate several First Nations communities in Manitoba.  We are looking deeper into First Nations communities to understand their beliefs, values, art, education, and compare them our own communities using stories, video clips and information online.
